Today we discuss in what spheres applied drawing is used and what it is even for.

First, let’s understand how applied drawing differs from classical academic drawing and where it is “applied”.

So, the characteristics of applied drawing:

Applied drawing is drawing that is applicable in different fields.

Specifics:

– Meets/serves specific goals and objectives

– Expresses a specific idea, design or image

– Calculated for further realization in some product: animation, games, comics, etc.

Thus, applied drawing is not just about doing exercises, hours of honing technique, and endless still lifes. When you study applied drawing, you are primarily focused on its future application.

Where does the pattern apply?

Why do you need a drawing?

Is drawing as important to a 2D artist as it is to a 3D artist? For us, the answer is obvious – yes, very important. A confident draw is a strong foundation, which means a wider range of opportunities, flexible thinking, effective and rapid growth, and confidence in your abilities. In addition, spatial thinking is developed through drawing (e.g., when practicing perspective and volume). And this will definitely come in handy for working with 3D, for example.

In what modern areas is drawing used?

Gaming industry

When we see the final product – the game – it’s hard to imagine what role drawing can play for the industry. But many concept artists begin their work specifically with pencil sketches. Some customers accept pencil works as concepts. The knowledge of drawing also comes in handy for working on interfaces.

In what modern areas is drawing used?

Industrial Design.

The most obvious example is automobile design. Knowledge of applied drawing is indispensable here.

The work of animated movie artists.

Concepts again, design backgrounds for cartoons, even storyboards – drawing is everywhere in this field.

Design and Advertising.

In this field, drawing can be used not only to create sketches for future layouts, but also as the main expressive means: hand-drawn illustrations have been popular for many years.

In addition, drawing is always necessary for illustrations – book, magazine, advertising, sketches for tattoos, prints for clothing – the list is endless.

And lastly, one small piece of advice. Not just for those beginning to learn drawing, but for anyone on the cusp of learning.

It’s important to learn smoothly, gradually and do the work at a comfortable pace. Drawing is like a sport – if you come to the gym and immediately take a heavy weight, there is a risk of not only failing to cope with the load, but also to injure yourself and discourage any desire to continue training. It’s the same with painting. Do what you can do, if possible with a good teacher to guide you. And with proper load distribution, the result will be fast and effective. And it’ll all work out!
