In this lesson from the Skills Up School Mentoring Team, we draw metal using a cute coin as an example. Tips on overlay modes are traditionally included in the tutorial.

1. Draw the linework with an oval selection, add the thickness of the coin, draw the crown with a stiff brush by holding Shift

2. Fill the color of the coin on the layer under the liner

3. Add shadows on a separate layer in Multiply mode

4. Work out the darkest areas, outline scratches

5. Draw light with a soft brush in Overlay mode

6. Work through tonal and color gradations using a brush with transfer setting

7. Drawing bright highlights in Color Dodge mode

8. Adding overall contrast and contour light
