A cool and recognizable character — what is he like?

Close your eyes for a second and remember three bright characters from cartoons. Remembered? Why do you think именно they came to mind? What do they have in common, even if they are very different? Regardless of whether the hero is positive or negative, an old cartoon or a modern one, in what style the character is drawn and what universe he belongs to, all characters have something in common.

Iconic silhouette

Let's conduct a small experiment. Guess who is depicted in this picture? Surely it was not difficult at all — a good silhouette works for character recognition.

Color combination

Disney's Winnie-the-Pooh is yellow and wears a red shirt. Piglet from the Russian cartoon is pink (which is logical) and wears blue pants with a white checkered pattern. Now remember the colors that belong to Disney's Ariel, the color of the suit of the Hare from «Nu, pogodi» or the colors of Dipper's cap from «Gravity Falls». Color also plays an important role in the character's image.

Characteristic details

Rick's white coat and crazy hairstyle from «Rick and Morty», red hats and a teapot on the heads of Virt and Gregory from «Over the Garden Wall», hairstyle, mole on the forehead and many rings on Yubaba's fingers from «Spirited Away». Details of the image are very memorable and can tell a lot about the character's nature. Especially for those who love bright characters and want to learn how to draw them, Skills Up School has a course Character Design in Animation. In the course you learn to make character concepts that can tell a whole story with just their look! We pay special attention to how to make the character functional for animation, but if you just want to come up with and style characters, the course will also be useful. Details and the nearest start date — here. Write to us on Telegram to sign up for the course or ask questions.
