How to learn to draw with a pencil: free lessons
An artist needs practice — how else to improve skills? It is not necessary to constantly draw weapon concepts or the flight of dragons. Sometimes light exercises are enough, which require only a simple pencil, a notebook and 10 minutes.
We share with you one of such exercises that will help you learn to draw with a pencil.
Comment by Diana Pryadieva, curator of the Drawing direction:
«This exercise is about plasticity and rhythm in the silhouette. With its help, we learn to make objects more expressive, interesting to the viewer. The main task is to find a simple form and make it dynamic»
First, we create arbitrary silhouettes. Let's call them «pebbles» (because they will look very much like small stones).

1. We begin by defining the shape of the pebble. We find the reference points and make sure that there are no identical segments — it looks boring. There is a rule «big-medium-small»: all modules should be of different lengths. This way we set the rhythm of our shape.
2. After we add plasticity. We work through arcs, alternate straight and more curved lines. Do not forget about variety. Straight, curved, short, long. We emphasize the movement in the silhouette.

3. Then we add a chamfer to the object to make it more voluminous.
4. We practice a graphic technique. We make hatching according to the shape, identify the inclined planes of the chamfer, accentuate the transition from one plane to another. We make the line along the silhouette more diverse, place accents on the plane breaks.
As a training exercise, you can fill a whole sheet with such pebbles. This takes 10-15 minutes.

For adults who are starting from scratch to master drawing with a pencil, Skills Up School has Drawing Basic course. The course is also suitable for those who are going to enter an art university.
The training is based on a classical model reformatted to fit modern trends (industrial design, game graphics, classical animation, etc.). In 8 weeks you will gradually master drawing simple and complex objects from different angles, work on volumes and plasticity.
